English Literature

English Literature is the study of authors and their published works. We can learn so much from books throughout history - Literature teaches you how to find and interpret this information.

KS3
In Years 7, 8 and 9 you will study Literature alongside Language, reading a text as a class as well as a reading book of your own choosing. Students study a range of stimulating novels, short stories, poems and plays which ensures progression as they develop and mature as readers. Non fiction and media texts are also an important part of the reading menu. Wherever possible individual reading for pleasure is encouraged and valued.

KS4
The department builds on the foundations of Key stage 3 and aims to develop students' reading, writing, and speaking and oracy skills so that they can succeed as independent learners and achieve their potential in achieving a good qualification at GCSE level. The students are assessed through Controlled Assessments and external examinations.

In Years 10 and 11, you will spend several weeks focusing on Literature in the run-up to a Controlled Task or exam. Then you may move on to a Language task, or another Literature task depending on the time of year.

By the time you finish your five years at Penglais, you should leave with a GCSE in English Language and a GCSE in English Literature. The exam board Penglais uses to assess you is the WJEC - the WJEC website can have a lot of helpful exam information on it.
