English Language

English Language is the study of words and their impact on the reader. As you probably know, words can be powerful; they can carry many meanings, many intentions, and a lot of history.

KS3
In Years 7, 8 and 9 you will study Language alongside Literature, and you will probably have set Language lessons during your two-week timetable. Ask your teacher which lessons these are. The English Department offers a varied and stimulating course that covers all areas of the subject. Writing skills are taught throughout the key stage so that students are encouraged to become confident and accurate writers with a good understanding of how language works.

In class all students are given frequent opportunities to develop their speaking and listening skills through discussions, role play and individual contributions. Such activities also encourage sound skills in cooperation and working together.

KS4
In Years 10 and 11, you will spend several weeks focusing on Language in the run-up to a Controlled Task or exam. Then you may move on to a Literature Task.

The department builds on the foundations of Key stage 3 and aims to develop students' reading, writing and speaking and oracy skills so that they can succeed as independent learners and achieve their potential in achieving a good qualification at GCSE level. The students are assessed through Controlled Assessments and external examinations.

By the time you finish your five years at Penglais, you should leave with a GCSE in English Language and a GCSE in English Literature. The exam board Penglais uses to assess you is the WJEC - the WJEC website can have a lot of helpful exam information on it.
